Sam began learning darkroom photography while attending Scripps College in Claremont, CA, where she majored in media studies and minored in physics. She took photo classes at both Pomona College and Pitzer College. Her senior project, hystera, was a photographic essay on the way the medical community throughout the centuries has used the uterus as “proof” of female inferiority.

Sam has taken art classes in a variety of mediums at Clark College, including photography, ceramics, drawing, jewelry making, welding, and calligraphy. She has also earned a post-baccalaureate in photography at the Oregon College of Art and Craft.

Alternative processes, pinhole cameras, altered cameras, and traditional black and white are Sam’s favorite areas of photography. She also creates in ceramics, fiber arts, and is starting to combine her photography with book arts. Sam also enjoys filmmaking in Super8 and 16mm formats.
